IIS reads the rules through its URL Rewrite module, so there is no <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">.htaccess<\/code> and nothing to restart: save the file and the rule is live. For the two most common jobs, HTTP to HTTPS and www to non-www, use Plesk&#8217;s own settings first and keep <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">web.config<\/code> for everything else.<\/p>\n<p>This guide is for site owners and developers on Windows hosting with Plesk, whether a shared Windows plan or your own Windows VPS. If there isn&#8217;t one, create it. Writing <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">^\/about-us&#092;.html$<\/code> is the mistake I see most, and it simply never matches. Keep the old domain registered and the rule in place for at least a year.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 6: Redirect a long list of URLs with a rewrite map<\/h3>\n<p>After a site rebuild you might have dozens of old addresses. One rule per URL gets slow to maintain; a rewrite map keeps them in a lookup table. A <strong>rewrite<\/strong> keeps the address in the browser and serves a different file behind it. A front-controller rule matches almost everything, so any redirect below it never runs.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 8: Test with curl, not the browser<\/h3>\n<p>Browsers cache 301 redirects, sometimes for days, so a mistake you&#8217;ve fixed can still look broken. While you&#8217;re still experimenting, use <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">redirectType=&quot;Found&quot;<\/code> (a 302, not cached) and switch to <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">Permanent<\/code> when the rule is right.<\/p>\n<h2>Common Issues &amp; Troubleshooting<\/h2>\n<h3>HTTP Error 500.19 &#8211; Internal Server Error (0x8007000d)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cause:<\/strong> IIS can&#8217;t read <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">web.config<\/code>. Either the XML is malformed (a missing closing tag, an unescaped <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">&amp;<\/code> in a URL) or the URL Rewrite module isn&#8217;t installed, so IIS doesn&#8217;t recognise the <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">&lt;rewrite&gt;<\/code> section.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fix:<\/strong> restore your saved copy so the site comes back, then add the change again and check it in an XML validator. Write <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">&amp;<\/code> in URLs as <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">&amp;amp;<\/code>. If a valid file with a single simple rule still fails, the module is missing; ask your host.<\/p>\n<h3>HTTP Error 500.19 with &#8220;Cannot add duplicate collection entry&#8221; (0x800700b7)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cause:<\/strong> two rules have the same <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">name<\/code>, or the same rule is defined in <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">web.config<\/code> and at server level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fix:<\/strong> give every rule a unique name. If the duplicate comes from the server, rename yours.<\/p>\n<h3>Plesk&#8217;s HTTP to HTTPS redirect stopped working<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cause:<\/strong> Plesk adds its HTTPS redirect as a URL Rewrite rule above your site. Code samples copied from the web often include <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">&lt;clear \/&gt;<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fix:<\/strong> delete the <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">&lt;clear \/&gt;<\/code> or <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">&lt;remove&gt;<\/code> line from <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">httpdocs\/web.config<\/code> and test again.<\/p>\n<h3>ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cause:<\/strong> the redirect target matches the same rule again (for example <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">^blog<\/code> redirecting to <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">\/blog-archive\/<\/code>), or your own HTTPS rule fights Plesk&#8217;s HTTPS or preferred-domain setting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fix:<\/strong> anchor patterns with <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">^<\/code> and <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">$<\/code> so the target can&#8217;t match, and don&#8217;t write HTTPS or www rules when Plesk&#8217;s settings from Step 1 are on.<\/p>\n<h3>The rule works but Plesk later removed it<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Cause:<\/strong> Plesk writes some hosting settings (default documents, handler mappings, ASP.NET options) into the same <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">web.config<\/code>. Custom rewrite rules normally survive, but a hand-edited file with unusual structure can be rewritten.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fix:<\/strong> keep your rules in a clean <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">&lt;rewrite&gt;<\/code> block inside the single <code class=\"\" data-line=\"\">&lt;system.webServer&gt;<\/code> section, and keep a copy of the file offline.
